Enthalpy Calculator

Calculate enthalpy change using q = m x c x Delta T (calorimetry).

Formula
q = m x c x Delta T
What is This Tool?

In calorimetry, the heat exchanged (q) during a reaction or process is calculated using q = mc Delta T, where m is mass, c is specific heat capacity, and Delta T is the temperature change. This allows us to determine the enthalpy change of a reaction.

Formula
q = m x c x Delta T Where: q = heat energy (J) m = mass of substance (g) c = specific heat capacity (J/g C) Delta T = T_final - T_initial (C)
Worked Examples

1. Heating water

Given: 100 g water, c = 4.184, from 25 C to 35 C

Delta T = 35 - 25 = 10 C

q = 100 x 4.184 x 10

q = 4184 J = 4.184 kJ

Result: 4,184 J (4.184 kJ)

2. Exothermic reaction

Given: 200 g water, c = 4.184, from 22 C to 28 C

Delta T = 28 - 22 = 6 C

q = 200 x 4.184 x 6 = 5020.8 J

Result: 5,020.8 J (5.021 kJ) absorbed by water
