What is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator helps you quickly figure out how much to leave for your server, bartender, delivery driver, or any service professional. You enter the bill total, choose a tip percentage, and it does the math instantly — no mental gymnastics required. It also splits the total evenly among your group so everyone knows exactly what they owe.

Tipping customs vary widely around the world. In the United States, 15–20% is the standard range for sit-down restaurant service, with 20–25% for exceptional service. In countries like Japan and France, tipping is either uncommon or even considered rude — the service charge is often built into the price. No matter where you are, this tool adapts to any percentage you choose.

How to Use

  1. 1Enter the total bill amount before tip.
  2. 2Select or type in your desired tip percentage (15%, 18%, 20%, or custom).
  3. 3Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. 4Instantly see the tip amount, the grand total, and each person's share.

Formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip% / 100) Total = Bill + Tip Per Person = Total / People

The tip is calculated as a percentage of the pre-tax bill amount. The grand total is the original bill plus the tip. Dividing the grand total by the number of people gives each person's fair share.

Worked Examples

Dinner for 2 — $85 bill, 20% tip

Tip = $85 × 0.20 = $17.00. Grand total = $85 + $17 = $102.00. Each person pays $102 ÷ 2 = $51.00. Simple, fair, and no arguments at the table.

Group of 6 — $240 bill, 18% tip, splitting evenly

Tip = $240 × 0.18 = $43.20. Grand total = $240 + $43.20 = $283.20. Divided by 6 people, each person owes $283.20 ÷ 6 = $47.20. Just enter 6 in the "number of people" field and you're done.

Quick coffee — $6.50, rounding up

You grab a $6.50 coffee and want to leave a small tip. At 15%, the tip is $0.98 — most people just round up to $1.00 or $1.50. Use the custom tip field to enter any amount and the calculator will show the new total.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard tip percentage?
In the US, 15% is the minimum considered polite, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 25% or more is a great way to show appreciation for exceptional service. For delivery, 15–20% of the order total (or a flat $3–5 minimum) is typical. Counter service and fast casual spots usually fall in the 10–15% range.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides generally say tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is a government charge and not part of the service. In practice, most people tip on the post-tax total because it's easier to read off the receipt — the difference is only a dollar or two on an average meal, and servers appreciate the extra.
How much do you tip for bad service?
Most etiquette experts suggest still leaving 10–15% even for poor service, especially since the server may be dealing with kitchen issues beyond their control. If service was genuinely terrible, speaking with the manager is more effective than leaving no tip — servers often rely on tips as their primary income.
Do you tip at fast food restaurants?
Tipping at fast food is optional and less expected than at full-service restaurants. However, at coffee shops, food trucks, or counter-service spots where staff are preparing your order fresh, a small tip of 10–15% is a nice gesture. The tip jar or digital prompt is your cue.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
This calculator splits the total evenly. For uneven splits — say one person ordered appetizers and another didn't — the best approach is to calculate each person's subtotal separately, then apply the tip percentage to their individual portion. Or keep it simple: add up everyone's items, agree on a single tip percentage, and use this calculator to find the total, then sort out the individual amounts among yourselves.
