Student Loan Calculator

Calculate monthly payments and total cost of a student loan.

Formula
M = P x [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1]
What is This Tool?

This calculator uses the standard amortization formula to determine your monthly student loan payment, total interest paid, and total cost over the life of the loan. Understanding these numbers helps you compare loan offers and plan your repayment strategy.

Formula
M = P x [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1] Where: M = monthly payment P = principal (loan amount) r = monthly interest rate (annual rate / 12) n = total number of payments (years x 12)
Worked Examples

1. Standard federal loan

Given: $30,000 at 5.5% for 10 years

r = 0.055/12 = 0.004583

n = 10 x 12 = 120 payments

M = 30000 x [0.004583(1.004583)^120] / [(1.004583)^120 - 1]

M = $325.61

Result: $325.61/month, $9,073.03 total interest

2. Higher loan amount

Given: $50,000 at 6.8% for 10 years

r = 0.068/12 = 0.005667

n = 120

M = $575.40

Result: $575.40/month, $19,048.19 total interest
