What is This Tool?

Reaction rate measures how fast a reactant is consumed or a product is formed over time. The average rate is calculated from the change in concentration divided by the time interval. Instantaneous rate at a specific moment requires calculus (the derivative of concentration vs. time).

Worked Examples

1. Decomposition reaction

Given: [A] drops from 0.50 M to 0.30 M over 10 s

Rate = |0.30 - 0.50| / (10 - 0)

Rate = 0.20 / 10

Result: 0.02 M/s

2. Slow reaction

Given: [B] drops from 1.0 M to 0.95 M over 100 s

Rate = |0.95 - 1.0| / 100 = 0.05 / 100

Result: 0.0005 M/s
